This week I went to the screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the oriental theater. I also had the honor of meeting Vilmos Zsigmond, the cinematographer for the film. I’ve seen the movie several times and actually had watched it just a couple months prior but it was a great experience getting to see the film projected on 35mm. The film’s special effects are very much magical and allows you to lose your self in the film’s world. My favorite sequence of the film this time around was when Roy encounters the aliens for the first time. The car stops and turns off and the road signs and everything surrounding begins flashing and shaking. It was a great use of storytelling and simple effects to show an experience.
